Darrin Berkley is the Mathematics Success, Outreach, and Retention (SOAR) Coordinator at Frederick Community College and a USCF expert-ranked chess player. He tutors, counsels, and coaches students through whichever subject is standing in their way — algebra, calculus, SAT prep, or the Sicilian Defense.

A teacher first, always
Darrin Berkley is the Mathematics Success, Outreach, and Retention (SOAR) Coordinator at Frederick Community College. He previously served as a professor of mathematics at Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Colgate University, a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education from Millersville University, and a Doctorate in Mathematics Education from Morgan State University.
Darrin also holds a graduate certificate in academic advising. He has worked with a diverse group of students to help them make decisions about college and future employment — helping them analyze and understand the consequences behind their choices, and invest in their own decision-making process.
He listens for the student’s voice by incorporating journal writing into his teaching, and reads hundreds of student papers each year addressing the concerns learners face in mathematics education. He has also given a number of presentations in the field of mathematics education, gaining perspective on mathematics from students of every age along the way.

Now the SOAR Coordinator at Frederick Community College and previously a professor of mathematics at Howard Community College, Darrin holds a graduate certificate in academic advising and has spent a career counseling students through the non-academic obstacles — time management, attitude, focus — that so often stand between them and success.
As a Competitor
An expert-level player with the U.S. Chess Federation, Darrin ranks in the top 5% of chess players in the United States and has competed for more than 25 years. He served as the chess club advisor at Howard Community College, mentoring students through both winning and losing.
